Symbiosis (Post Jam Update)
Controls
During this games jam I wanted to experiment with controls in an attempt at making each host feel different. I felt like it was appropriate given that jams like these are a great place for trying new things, but sometimes players became frustrated due to the awkwardness of the controls, and didn't get to experiance everything this game had to offer.
To fix this I have turned off directional controls for WASD hosts by default and made an option available in the settings menu to turn them back on.
Balance and Enemy improvements
Balancing this game was often challenging given that 2/4 enemies weren't really interesting in attacking the player, and there are a lot of abilities that negate damage. To fix this the cowardly enemies will now drop mines if the player gets too close.
On top of that all enemies will do more damage to the player.
Host Changes
Host ability durations / cool-downs have been reduced so they can be used more frequently but don't last as long. The Cephaloform's ability has been updated and improved as it was prevously the weakest. It now has a knock back effect and a shiney new animation to go with it.
The Boss
The boss was in need of a lot of improvements, it was unpredictable and difficult to avoid which didn't reward skilful gameplay; To fix this I've added new animations to indicate what the boss is going to do next, and added in a rage mode for when the player is able to kill off all of it's additional cells to make the boss fight a little more interesting.
Other Changes
- Player Data is now saved so that unlocks aren't lost when you close the session. However unlocks are harder to aquire and you won't get everything after a single good run.
- More Juice. Gameplay is a lot more polished and provides a more explosive feel.
- Harder difficulty, enemies do more damage, and you get less Iframes when hit.
- Added better UI elements to explain the game mechanics, abilities, and unlock progression.
- Victory sequence is now a lot less anticlimactic. There's a proper ending dialogue and a kill counter to track how well you did during your run.
- A dynamic camera has been added so that you can see different parts of the screen depending on your look direction.
- Settings Menu is now available at all times.
- Level transition is a lot smoother.
- Knockback effecs are more consistent and only occure during physics frames.
- The drill parasite no longer blocks collsions.
